Gallery Omicron presents the new solo exhibition of Giorgos Stathopoulos, “Closed City,” which opens on September 1, 2020, at the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, in the “Purification Tanks” space. The exhibition runs from September 1 to September 13, 2020.
“Closed City”: A few words about the exhibition
Giorgos Stathopoulos, who belongs to the generation of contemporary painters, studied painting and sculpture in Athens at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1966–1971), under the guidance of distinguished figures in the Greek art scene, such as Yannis Moralis and Nikos Nikolaou.
His work, which seeks to merge the artist himself with the otherworldly and the real, is crafted with sensitivity and thought, moving within the realm of Greekness. The painter explores and discovers relationships between colors and designs, which emerge from surrealist and expressionist elements structured within a simplistic style that draws us into the vastness of the dreamlike multicolored city, the times, and the human bodies.
The city is the protagonist, closed and forbidden. Yet it is also surrealistically open, erotic, and multi-layered.
Such are the vertical cities of Giorgos Stathopoulos, with his distinctive style that emphasizes the optimistic side of things, celebrates humanity and beauty, and takes us on a sensuous journey to his own universal and erotic “Closed City.”
